Niederberger-Engineering AG developed for von Moos AG (today Swiss Steel in Emmenbrücke, Lucerne) their current casting ladle.

It can be opened on the ground to allow for a controlled and constant outflow.

The casting ladle is filled with 80 tonns of liquid steel and moved around the steel mill with heavy duty cranes.

The tilting station for a controlled preheating of the casting ladle which was developed by Niederberger Engineering too, you can find below.


The steel in the casting ladle is over 1500 C hot and with a mass of 80t very difficult to handle. Any leaking or spilling of the liquid steel has deadly consequences for close-by workers. Because of that are the safety requirements for the construction and the calculations very high.

The Niederberger-Engineering AG made the required technical drawings and calcullations for the casting ladle.

The tilting installation for pre-heating of the casting ladles was also developed by the Niederberger-Engineering AG.


To fulfil the high safety requirements were two independent sets of calculations made for the casting ladle.

Both calculation models had to show that the casting ladle would withstand any stress during its use.

One one hand was a FEM-analysis made and on the other a wire model as a comparison calculation.

The strong and partially unknown amount of thermal extension made the calculations considerably more difficult.

The casting ladle was segmented in many very small areas to calculate the local stress and deformation.

Niederberger-Engineering AG put a great focus on the floor of the casting ladle since it is the most heavily taxed part.

The casting ladle was analysed for different criteria. The amount and position of the local material stress was calculated as well as the deformation of the casting ladle to make sure precise handling is allways possible.

The most deformed zones are colored blue.

The result of the load is a big bulge in the bottom of the container.

Two reinforcements was placed on the bottom to decrease the deformation.

At the border the notch had to be strengthen.

The most stressed points are marked red, the blue areas are virtually unstressed.

The biggest tension is located On the cross-braces, on the bottom and on the transition between bottom and wall of the container.


The enterprise Swiss Steel (Emmenbrücke in Lucerne) needed a tipping installation to easier work with the 60t steel cans.

The over 60 tons heavy containers have to be turned by 90 . In this position are the inside of the cans heated up with flame-throwers.

The Niederberger-Engineering AG made the technical paintings and detailed calculations for the tilting installation.


The machine has to safely hold a heavy weight of 60t.


The installation has to withstand high temperature changes for at least a short time. The heating up of the can is done with powerful flame-throwers, so that on one hand does the can become very hot and on the other could the flames hit the tilting installation directly.
